As the Garden Grows

This year’s garden is coming along very nicely.  I’ve already started pulling yellow squash and zucchini off the vine.  Some of the zucchini are huge, like football sized, big enough to feed a small family off of one!  Then weeding on Sunday we discovered that the green beans are ready to start picking, not a full harvest, but a small start.  The kale is still growing like gangbusters. Tomatoes and green peppers are going to be ready to start harvesting soon.  The lima beans, cauliflower, pumpkins, and eggplant are all coming along nicely and should be a great fall harvest.  The carrots, gourds, sweet corn,  butternut squash, more pumpkins, and sunflowers are being planted yesterday and today ( a little late, I know) With all the rain we’ve been getting, there’s been no need to irrigate – I totally love that

The chickens are pretty cool.  We have the 8 hens and 1 rooster.  We call them “Kenny and his Bitches” LOL  Kenny, the rooster, discovered how to get in and out of the coop so most days he’s marching and crowing around the outside of the pen teasing the girls with his freedom, letting himself back in for food and sleep.  He struts around like he owns the place and even the Chihuahua next store learned to leave him alone after he chased her instead of running when she chased him LOL.  The hens aren’t producing as many eggs as I hoped, only about a dozen a week – I’m convinced that all the chickens are not laying, only maybe 2 or 3 out of the bunch. But that’s part of the learning process too, getting the right chickens, the right feed, and the right production.

It’s all trial and error really. You plant something and hope it grows.  When it grows you have to battle the weeds, the bugs, and molds and mildews.  Using as little chemicals as possible we’re keeping everything healthy. So far we’re still organic, but that’s about to change with the squashes and pumpkins, the wind is blowing from the South and that brings all kinds of fun thing like downy mildew and powdery mildew – we have to spray today.

So when Wolf and I get home from painting the living room, kitchen, dining room, hall and all the new doors and trim in this house and replacing a floor (leaky water heater) We’ll be strapping on 4 gallon backpacks and filling the spray tank pulled by the four wheeler to spray all the squash, 3 acres of pumpkins and the random pumpkin plants that have sprouted up all over the farm from last year LOL  Not like it’s going to be brutally hot or anything today….

So my thoughts this weeks are really…. crap who has time to think?  How about some pictures 😉

  1. I am always amazed by the result of all your hard work. All those vegetables are amazing.

As for Kenny and the bitches, I would definitely not know about how to increase egg production. I just don’t know anything about chickens. Still having some fresh eggs sounds pretty fabulous to me.

We were getting quite a bit of rain here in Kansas but last week everything got hot and dry. However, with the early storms everyone here is having problems with fungus, mold and such. The spraying of your crops sounds daunting.

    Have a good week!!!

  2. It is amazing how much you and Wolf can do on your own. No wonder you need to take off on a boat for the winter, but then that sounds like work, too. I love it when you include pictures.
