TST #195 Two Thoughts on Tuesday

So after a few rough passages it’s nice to come into port and relax.  We watch a little TV – here it’s mostly PBS – play on the internet, watch a little Netflix.  Sometime while playing on the net I like to read weird news stories.  The weirdest this week on MSN…

Giant gas-huffing bears running around Russian nature preserve

Occasionally, you get stories out of Russia that just seem made up — like this one. Apparently, bears in Russia’s Kronotsky Nature Reserve have developed a taste for kerosene and gasoline, huffing it out of discarded barrels and drums before passing out in the snow. Photographer Igor Shpilenok said a few even stalk helicopters, “waiting for takeoff and drops of fuel to leak onto the hard soil.” The  nature reserve is home to more than 700 brown bears, some of which weigh up to 1,200 pounds, making them among the largest in the world. Enormous, gas-huffing bears

Now my first thought this week.  Do I need to say it?  Gas huffing bears?  Really?  Russia, you win – not only do I not want to check out you r preserves, I don’t want to do it in anything fuel powered.  What’s next?  Attacking hikers for their propane cannisters instead of their food… learning to press the nozzle just right to get a good huff?  I can see them now progressing to paints and polishes… What is this world coming to?

Today we’re making our way through the Dismal Swamp.  I know it sounds terrible but really it’s one of the most beautiful places.  This morning we’re dealing with a bit of drizzle and fog, but that makes for really cool pictures – especially of the dead trees and moss covered water.  Winter is still here and everything is still hibernating, with the exception of a couple early budding trees and early blooming bushes.

Thought #2 Our cruise this year is coming to an end, only 250 miles left, and most of that will be completed in the Chesapeake Bay.  Now if only the winter weather will give us a good crossing window….

  1. And I thought Russian bears would be huffing vodka! It’s very hard for me to beliee that Dismal Swamp is a beautiful place but I absolutely love the picture of the gray day with the solitary red sign. It almost looks Photoshopped. You wouldn’t do that, would you? 🙂

  2. Bud,

Thank you 🙂 I never Photoshop my pictures… well not while I’m in the boat anyway. I do a little editing when I get home before I frame or print (only he really good pictures) but then mostly I just crop out the ugly LOL I’m not good at editing so I just take a ton of pictures and hope I got a few good ones.

  3. Could that be true about the gas huffing bears. If it is…what about the carcinigen effect of gas fumes. Isn’t that why all the tanks in the US went to the vapor locks so we would no longer breath in fumes. Some Russian vet better get working on the long term effects of gassy bears.

I love …really LOVE your pictures. You could put together a coffee table book with all your travel pictures.

  4. Cheryl,

Not sure if it’s true, but it was on MSN. I just got a kick of the story… LMAO @ Gassy bears!

Thank you. We take s many pictures as we travel, I have thousands of them. Thank goodness for digital cameras, I can keep on clicking hoping to get the shot I wanted. Maybe someday we’ll make a book, thanks for the idea 🙂
