Top Sites Tuesday #29 What was your first car or Favorite car?

Oh I like this one!  My first car was a 1966 Porsche 912 and here's the story:

When I was 15 I was ready to be on my own.  I was ready to take on the world and I wanted a car so bad.  See, in Delaware I was able to get my license 6 weeks before my 16th birthday.  I made the deal with my parents that they would match everything I could save towards a car.  I don't think they knew how greedy I was and hard I would work to get what I wanted.

I spent the summer working in a window and door factory.  They didn't pay attention to my age because I was a hard worker, or because I was comic relief ;)   They let me work 18 hours a day - Child Labor Laws were out the window!  I got a ton of overtime and I saved nearly every penny I earned.  When the Summer was almost over I started looking for my car.  I wanted something no one else would have - something that screamed "I'm Trina's Car" or "Trina-mobile" LOL  So I read "The Guide" - if you are not from here you must know that "The Guide" is the bible of for sale stuff around here, It comes out every Wednesday and it's free to read and full of stuff.  Then I saw it... right below an article for a Karmen Ghia - 1966 Porsche 912...

We went to look at it and I was stoked!  It was in my price range and no one else would have one and it was a classic so I could take it to car shows with my Grandpa.

We pulled up and it was in the front yard - it looked dead.  The brakes were bad, it needed tires, the carpet was a mess... it was a project car that someone else had started but not finished.  We struck a deal and it became my project car.

We drove it home carefully and parked it out back and started to work on it.  Brakes first - after all one must be able to stop a car that goes really fast.  We rebuilt the calipers, installed new brakes pads, replaced the master cylinder and some brake lines and "bled" that brake lines to empty all the air in the new lines... A definite learning experience.

Then I bought some carpet and Pops ttaught me how to cut carpet to fit inside the trunk and on the floors (more fun to write about than to actually do)

I bought an awesome stereo with an amplifier and a subwoofer - I know I didn't need all that, but it was awesome anyway. I played Type O Negative's Bloody Kisses CD as loud as it would go and screamed my way to school when everything was finally ready for me to start driving. You had to be there to know the moment - I was a grunge/goth fan still coming into my own and Type O had this one some - Christian Woman... Well I suppose that's another blog post!

When I pulled into school, everyone looked.  I was queen!  LOL But my lovely car was a standard and I was not good at driving slow so I had to whip around to keep it from stalling out.  I think I scared a lot of people... I though I was queen, but looking back I was a wreck waiting to happen and people were just trying to stay out of my way!

Here's a picture (I didn't actually take many, so this is the very best picture) It's from the Car Show in Harrington Delaware in 1997 - I won a hard luck award at that show, but that's a story for another day :)

Wow..that’s a beauty, Trina. And a wonderful story to go with it. Sounds like so much fun. Over here, labour is quite inexpensive so we depend on our mechanic for most things, so end up quite ignorant when it comes to such things. Kudos to you and your first car. Heres my click, definitely!

Great first car, and not many people would have worked that hard at that young an age. Good for you. Also nice that you were able to hit the car shows with your granddad. A fixer upper worth the effort, and you made that effort! Way to go.

Hey when your driving a Porche, you have to go FAST!

Here’s your click.

Wow, your first car was a Porche. Yikes I don’t think I would have let my kids have a car like that, it goes to fast. I would have to break it in for them for a while! LOL!

Here’s your click ………..

Love and Blessings,
