My Choice for President?
Who do I want to be president? Thats a question many people acroos the world are asking themselves. Americans may not even think about it, but everyone in the world can be effected by our choice in president. I think we’ve all seen what happens when our choice in president turns out to be “Not so Good.” And looking at our current choices… it’s going to be “Not so Good” again.
So what am I basing my decision on?
- Experience
- Lesser of the three evils
- Who deserves to be president
- Who’s going to make small but effective changes and not make a bigger mess out of Washington
I guess it may seem like those are really lame things to base my decision on, but at least I’m not saying race or sex. I guess mostly because old white men have served our country well, for the most part, since the founding of the United States.
When this race began I had was rooting for Hillary Clinton to win - I suppose it was the feminist side of me thinking that a woman in the White House would be good for our country - but she had White House experience. Following down my list of criteria, she wasn’t a Republican - so that’s a lesser of the three evils- and after the shit her husband put her through (how very embarrassing) I think she definitely deserves to be President. But she’s talking about huge changes. Hillary’s high priorities include: Ending the war in Iraq, health care reform and strengthening the middle class. She’s Pro-choice, supports capital punishment and has some great ideas about education.
For one moment people let’s talk reality. First, you are not going to end this war. Go ahead bring our guys home - piss off those people once again, like we did in Saudi Arabia - and see if this “War on Terror” doesn’t become really scary for us. Second, do you really think tat we can just pull out of a country that we just totally devastated? Come on! You know it’s neat to watch a farmer plow a field, but if he doesn’t follow through and make sure to plant the seeds and water them, he’s not going to have any thing but a muddy, weed filled piece of land.
Oh - and uh, yeah - Hillary and Obama neither have ANY real war experience.
So I’m supporting John McCain. I hear people saying all the time that McCain is just going to be a continuation of the “Bush” Presidencies. Whatever. I like John McCain. He’s proven himself a great diplomat around the world, he has war experience (we all know that and If you don’t you should really read up on his life as a POW or just watch this) So he’s a republican, is that really so bad? Do we all have to base our decision on Party Affiliation? Hell half the people I talk to don’t even know why they are a Republican or a Democrat - most of them say something like, “Well, my mom and Dad are and my grandparents are and I feel the same way they do, so that must make me the same as them.”
But most of all, I think McCain will be good or this country. He doesn’t have any idealist platforms that are not based in reality. He’s straightforward, to the point and has plenty experience in both politics and in war.
So I support John McCain.

Hmmm…still leaves me with no-one I’d vote for. I do believe we need a universal health care system and, while many are nay-sayers, even the Canadian system would be welcome, UK better (and, trust me, it is NOT what most would have you believe it to be, scaring everyone to death!). Certainly don’t believe in the death penalty/capital punishment but do wish we could revamp the justice system and hold hard to stringent sentencing, no plea bargains et al. Having spent twenty+ years (as an adult) in a military environment, I want our people home from Iraq and yet, yes…do not believe we can possibly leave the Iraqi people in the mess we and our allies created. Not just this time but back in ‘91. I’m a pacifist, was in that military environment during Vietnam and didn’t believe in that ‘war’ either. I’m not for being an isolationist but nor do I believe we must interfere in the cultures, traditons, religions or lives of everyone with whom we don’t agree. This is what I feel creates distrust, fear and even hatred.
We need to fix ourselves…our schools, courts, healthcare, poverty, economy and I don’t see anyone with a solid plan to do any of it.
Maybe I’ll buy an island and live by my own rules.
Interesting to read your opinion, Trina…enjoyed it.
